Our world is slowly dying

Firstly what is Anthropocene?

It relates to or denotes the current geographical age, it is viewed as the period during which human activity has been a dominant influence on the climate and environment.

Our major project was focused on how we as humans can improve the planet. It is important to note the heavy impact humans have on the planet and our planet is now suffering as a result. As we slowly start to make changes to our everyday lifestyles whether its going vegan, thrifting, carpooling or house sharing these changes can aid the planet for the positive.

Humans have dominant influence on the world we live in. Recent studies have shown that:

  • Species are becoming extinct 100 times faster than they would without human impacts.
  • Due to industry's we work in agriculture and fossil fuel use is producing high amounts of carbon dioxide resulting in seas and rivers becoming dead zones.
  • Global warming is causing glaciers to melt, sea levels are rising and natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods are becoming more common.
Turning back to the major project, my team and I decided we would look at how millennial's improve the planet as we have a lot of power in society today. Millennial's have the highest interest in becoming more sustainable as education today provides a lot of insight into the effects of poor lifestyle choices can have on the planet. Throughout the major project we addressed issues like fast fashion, job hopping and climate change. All topics relate to the brief given.

Fig 2: Water pollution as a result of fast fashion.

If we dont phase out fast fashion we are supporting the millions of toxins and waste that is contributing to the global waste water pollution with clothing and textiles being the second highest polluter in the world! Second hand shopping is now the way to go and with the power of social media millennial's can help to encourage this change.

This figures dsiplays the greenhouse gas effect whereby radiation from the sun is trapped in the earth's atmosphere by greenhouse gases.
Fig 3: Greenhouse gas emissions effect.

Climate change is something everyone is aware of. By reducing green house gas emissions we can significantly lower the Carbon dioxide emissions through burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil. Cutting down emissions through land like deforestation, urbanization and desertification. As a result of the increase in emissions they are being trapped in the climates system.

Lastly my group covered creating sustainable work environments, how companies can better their businesses to keep millennial's working for them longer. Seeing as millennial's make up a large portion of the workforce today they want to find meaning in where they work and environmental sustainability is important to many of them. If companies create an environmental CSR program it would connect both the millennial need for mission and the corporate to serve a social purpose.

To conclude today's blogpost, my team and I did a good job at addressing what factors can help improve the planet we live in. Incorporating small changes in your lifestyle can have a positive effect on the planet in the long run! As much as everyone hates change (me included) we need to understand that our planet is slowly 'dying' if we dont cut out these bad habits.

Team Progression Take Three

For our final project meeting we communicated through Facebook messenger and used Google Drive to share our final slideshows with each other. Each team member had put in equal amounts of effort and it was evident we had put in the hard work. I spent a few hours trying to create my slideshow that my laptop supported and I saw this as a challenge for me personally as my laptop wasn't cooperating with me. I over came this challenge after a few hours and had practiced my piece that I had written on Microsoft Word beforehand. I created a slideshow using various images to help aid what I talked about in my piece for the group. I found my pictures on various newspaper articles online and decided to put them into the presentation as visuals can aid the information given during presentations - a tip I learnt from the last presentation. After gathering my images for the slideshow I edited and took out any pieces of irrelevant information in my word document regarding sustainable fashion...

What influences my online persona?

Our modern world is completely different from the world that existed many years ago. The knowledge we have of ourselves and our whole entire universe has increased. Technological developments have revolutionized the way we communicate with each other.  Everyone has their own 'personal brand' while not many of us have consciously cultivated a brand, we have one, nonetheless. In our society nowadays we can choose to guide and cultivate the brand, or we can allow it to be defined on our behalf. In today's blog post I will explore what factors influence our online personas and in doing so how this affects how others may perceive us. For instance, if we take a normal conversation with someone in real life it is most likely to be direct and straight to the point as it cannot be as easily traced as if it was in a virtual environment setting. What we post online is going to be there forever as it is a lot more difficult to remove our digital traces in a world containing t...
